About C6 files
The .C6 file extension represents a flow cytometry experiment data file generated by the BD Accuri C6 flow cytometer. Researchers use these files to store multiparametric single-cell analysis data, including forward scatter (FSC), side scatter (SSC), and multiple fluorescence channels. You can open and analyze these files using the original BD Accuri C6 Software (formerly CFlow) or specialized analysis suites like FlowJo. Internally, a .C6 file operates as a compressed ZIP container holding raw event data, gating strategies, workspace layouts, and XML-based metadata. Storing data in a proprietary format like .C6 creates significant workflow bottlenecks. The files are often large and require specialized software to open. They cannot be directly imported into standard statistical tools like R or Python, and collaborating with researchers who lack BD software is difficult without conversion. The best conversion targets are industry-standard FCS (Flow Cytometry Standard) files for cross-platform cytometry analysis, CSV for raw numeric event data matrices, or PDF and PNG for sharing 2D scatter plots and histograms. Extracting to CSV will lose the visual gating logic but preserves raw numeric event coordinates. Because .C6 is a closed, proprietary workspace rather than a flat data file, standard online converters fail to process the complex internal XML and binary event streams. Often, only the original cytometer software can properly interpret the gating data.
