A .BXF file typically serves one of two completely different purposes depending on the industry: a Broadcast Exchange Format data file or a BIM project exchange file. In the broadcasting and media sector, .BXF files are standardized by SMPTE to exchange schedule, traffic, and content metadata between automated broadcast systems. These are essentially structured XML files. In the construction and architecture sector, a .BXF file is a SQLite database used by programs like BricsCAD and Tekla Structures to share 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) data. Rarely, it is also used by PedFast Technologies for animal pedigree data exports.
The main disadvantage of the .BXF format is its heavily overloaded extension. Standard online converters often fail because they cannot determine if the file contains plain text XML code or a compiled binary SQLite database. Broadcast .BXF files can also grow excessively large, crashing basic text editors, while BIM .BXF files require expensive, heavy CAD software to visualize the 3D data and read proprietary internal tables. This makes data extraction highly frustrating for users who just want to read the raw information without buying specialized software.
To overcome these hurdles, the best target formats for conversion are standard data formats. Broadcast files can be parsed to XML, JSON, or TXT to extract the schedule data. BIM files can be renamed or extracted to SQLITE, DB, or exported to CSV for tabular data review. Because of the proprietary nature of the database schemas and complex XML structures, only the original software can usually recreate the full project or broadcast schedule.
