About BU files

The .bu file extension represents two distinct, high-friction file types that often confuse users.

  1. Samsung/ALI DVR Video: Most commonly (64%), this is a CCTV Video Recording or Set-Top Box file generated by security systems (like Samsung DVRs) or digital receivers using ALI Corp chipsets. Unlike standard video files, these are often raw H.264 streams without the necessary container headers (index data), making them unplayable in standard software like Windows Media Player or QuickTime. To watch these on a PC or mobile device, you must convert them to MP4 or AVI.
  2. Allplan Engineering Backup: It also functions as a safety backup for Nemetschek Allplan, a BIM/CAD platform. These files are exact copies of drawings created during crashes or auto-saves. Users often mistakenly try to "open" them, but the correct workflow is to rename the extension back to NDW (for drawings) or NPL (for layouts) to restore the project.

The BU Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BU converter.
