About BTAB files
The .BTAB file extension stands for Bass Tablature. It is generally a text-based format containing musical notation specifically written for the bass guitar. Instead of standard sheet music, tablature uses ASCII characters to visually represent the strings and frets of the instrument. Historically, these files were created in simple text editors or dedicated tools like the vintage BTab editor, Power Tab Editor, or the open-source TuxGuitar.
The major disadvantage of .BTAB files is their absolute reliance on monospace formatting. If opened on a mobile device or in a word processor that uses a proportional font, the alignment instantly breaks, making the music impossible to read. Furthermore, basic ASCII tabs lack embedded audio playback, exact rhythmic notation, and standardized metadata.
Musicians frequently need to convert .BTAB files to PDF to lock the formatting in place for printing and sharing. Alternatively, importing them into modern notation software allows users to save the data as GPX (Guitar Pro) or MIDI for simulated audio playback.
Because .BTAB files can sometimes contain proprietary project data from older software rather than standard text, standard online converters often fail to process them.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BTAB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BTAB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BTAB converter.
