About BSF files

The .BSF extension is shared by two very different professional sectors, creating significant confusion for users trying to open them. The most common variation is the Block Symbol File, a proprietary schematic format used by Intel Quartus Prime (formerly Altera) for FPGA design. These files encapsulate logic blocks for visual circuit design but are strictly tied to the Quartus ecosystem. Users frequently struggle with these because they require the massive Quartus installation just to view the logic diagram. They cannot be opened in standard CAD tools like AutoCAD or vector editors like Adobe Illustrator. To document designs or share them with non-engineers, users often need to convert these schematics to PDF or standard image formats like PNG.

In the scientific and medical fields, a .BSF file is often a Biomechanics Data File generated by Bertec force plates or Biodex balance systems. These files contain raw binary data recording forces, moments, and center of pressure. The friction point here is data accessibility; researchers cannot easily import proprietary binary logs into analysis tools like MATLAB or Microsoft Excel. For data processing, the best workflow is converting these binary logs to human-readable CSV, TXT, or XLSX formats. Less commonly, .BSF files may be firmware updates for satellite receivers or specific video streams from Blu-ray discs, which generally require specific vendor tools or media transcoding to MKV or MP4 for playback.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BSF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JPEG, JPG, PDF, XISE, WCFG and DXD files.

The BSF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BSF converter.
