A .BSF file is a highly fragmented extension used across several completely different industries. Most commonly, it acts as a Block Symbol File - an electronic schematic used in FPGA and digital logic design. It can also store raw biomechanics force plate data from medical research hardware, or structural engineering project data saved in an XML format. You will typically encounter these files when working with Intel Quartus Prime, Xilinx ISE, Scia Engineer, or clinical systems from Bertec and Biodex.
The main disadvantage of the .BSF format is its proprietary lock-in. Whether it holds an FPGA circuit diagram or clinical force plate measurements, the data is usually encoded in a closed binary format. This means you cannot open it natively on Windows or macOS without installing the exact, often highly expensive, source software. Files generated by satellite receivers for firmware updates or by the Ubisoft Anvil game engine add further confusion, as they share the same extension but have totally different internal structures.
When attempting to convert a .BSF file, your target format depends entirely on its origin. Structural analysis .BSF files are often just XML documents and should be converted to standard XML or TXT. Biomechanics data is best exported to CSV for analysis in Microsoft Excel. EDA schematic files cannot usually be converted directly by third-party tools; they must be exported to PDF or SVG from within the original CAD software to retain visual fidelity.
