Convert BOM to another file type

To convert BOM bills of materials to another format, you need macOS Installer or other Data software.

Convert a file to BOM

To convert other file formats to the "Component List Database" file type, you need software like macOS Installer or a similar tool.

About BOM files

A .BOM file represents a Bill of Materials, but its exact structure depends entirely on the ecosystem that created it. In the Apple ecosystem, it acts as a package receipt for the macOS Installer, tracking which files were installed, their permissions, and checksums. In electronics engineering, it contains a list of physical components required to manufacture printed circuit boards (PCBs), generated by Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software like Altium Designer or Autodesk EAGLE. Occasionally, it is simply a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet mapping project materials.

The problem with .BOM files is their lack of interoperability. Apple's BOMStore files are compiled as binary databases, making them completely unreadable in standard text editors. You are forced to use the command-line lsbom utility just to see what a package actually installed. Conversely, CAD-generated .BOM files often contain proprietary formatting or macro dependencies that frustrate purchasing departments who simply need a clean spreadsheet. Sharing a raw .BOM file guarantees the recipient will struggle to open it unless they have the exact same engineering software suite installed.

To fix this, you must convert the file based on your audience. For procurement teams and general sharing, convert EDA .BOM files to CSV or XLSX so they can be easily manipulated. For archiving or sharing fixed hardware lists, convert to PDF. If you need to inspect an Apple receipt, converting the binary data to plain TXT is the only pragmatic workaround.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BOM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BOMDOC, CSV, XLSX, PDF, JSON, ZIP, XLS, PLIST, HTML, ODS, XML, OPJ and CAR files.

The BOM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BOM converter.
