About BLU files

The .BLU extension is a prime example of a "collision" format where two distinct industries use the same identifier for completely different data types. In 62% of cases, this file is a PLC Binary Library generated by Schneider Electric for its EcoStruxure (formerly Unity Pro) automation platform. These files act as compressed containers for programmable logic controller (PLC) function blocks and binary data. They are essentially proprietary ZIP archives used to transfer logic between industrial controllers without exposing the raw source code.

The second most common variation is a Minecraft world backup created by BlueStacks, the popular Android emulator. In this context, the .blu file is simply a compressed wrapper containing the game's level data (level.dat) and region files, designed to migrate worlds between emulator instances. Users frequently experience issues because neither file type behaves like a standard document; clicking them typically triggers an "Unknown File Type" error in Windows. Since both formats often utilize ZIP compression internally, the pragmatic workaround for inspection - specifically for the Minecraft/BlueStacks variant - is to rename the extension to ZIP and extract the contents. However, for industrial Schneider files, while you may see the file structure by unzipping, the internal binary logic remains unreadable without the licensed EcoStruxure Control Expert suite.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BLU file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted BPK, IO and GZ files.

The BLU Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BLU converter.
