About BKZ files
A .BKZ file is primarily a compressed backup archive generated by NCH Software FileFort or the Ukrainian accounting system M.E.Doc. While these files serve the critical function of safeguarding data against loss, their proprietary extension often confuses users who no longer have the original software installed. The operating system simply doesn't know how to handle them, leaving you with a locked box of data.
In reality, a .BKZ file is typically just a standard ZIP archive in disguise. The software renames the extension to maintain file association, but the internal structure remains identical to standard compression. Users frequently struggle because they attempt to 'convert' the backup itself, whereas the real goal is to extract the documents, databases, or images inside. For immediate access without installing specific backup utilities, the most practical approach is to rename the file extension to ZIP or open it directly with a universal archiver like 7-Zip or WinRAR. Once opened, you can extract the contents to a folder and then convert those individual files (like DOCX, XML, or JPG) to your desired formats.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BKZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert BKZ file to BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ, 7Z, RAR or ISO, you can use FileFort or similar software from the "Compressed Backup Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to BKZ, try FileFort or another comparable tool in the "Compressed Backup Archive" category.
The BKZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BKZ converter.
