About BIL files

A .BIL (Band Interleaved by Line) file is a raw binary raster format used primarily in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing to store multi-band satellite imagery or elevation data. Unlike standard image files, .BIL files store pixel data by writing all bands for a single row of pixels before moving to the next row, which optimizes processing speed for specific analysis tasks in software like ESRI ArcGIS Pro and GRASS GIS.

However, working with .BIL files presents significant challenges for non-specialists. Because the file is a raw binary dump, it lacks an internal header; it strictly requires a companion HDR (header) file and often a STX (statistics) file to be interpreted correctly. If these sidecar files are missing, the .BIL is virtually useless and cannot be opened. Furthermore, standard image viewers (Windows Photos, Mac Preview) and web browsers cannot display .BIL data, creating a proprietary lock-in to expensive GIS suites. To make this data accessible for reports, web display, or archiving, users should convert .BIL files to GeoTIFF or TIFF to preserve georeferencing and data depth, or to PNG and JPG for lightweight visual inspection.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BIL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZIP, KMZ, JPG, RS_, TFW and BIP files.

FAQ

If you want to convert BIL file to SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON, TIF, TIFF, ECW, SID, IMG or DEM, you can use ArcGIS Pro or similar software from the "GIS Raster Graphics" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to BIL, try ArcGIS Pro or another comparable tool in the "GIS Raster Graphics" category.

The BIL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BIL converter.
