The .BH extension serves two distinct, incompatible purposes that often confuse users. Most commonly, it is a Game Data Header used by Electronic Arts in titles like FIFA 14 and NHL 09. In this context, the file is functionally useless on its own; it acts as a directory map for a corresponding BIG file which holds the actual game assets (textures, audio, models). Users frequently try to open the .BH file hoping to see images, only to find hex data or referencing errors because the companion archive is missing or the proprietary format is locked. The second type is a legacy BlackHole compressed archive, a high-compression format from the late 1990s designed to outperform ZIP. These archives are now functionally obsolete and notoriously difficult to open because modern operating systems and standard tools like WinRAR or 7-Zip rarely support them natively.
For gamers and modders, the goal is usually extraction rather than direct conversion. You need to parse the header to extract the contents of the linked archive into editable formats like DDS (for textures), WAV (for audio), or standard PNG images. For legacy archives, the best approach is converting the entire container to a modern ZIP or 7Z file to ensure your data remains accessible without hunting for defunct extraction utilities.
