About BFRES files
The .BFRES file is a proprietary 3D model and texture archive used by Nintendo for Wii U and Nintendo Switch video games. It stores 3D meshes, skeletal animations, textures, and shader parameters required to render characters and environments. You can open and extract these files using community-developed modding software such as Switch Toolbox. Users typically need to convert .BFRES files to extract 3D assets for modding or fan animations. The primary disadvantage of the format is its closed, console-specific nature. Files are heavily optimized for Nintendo hardware, completely undocumented publicly, and incompatible with modern web browsers or standard 3D editors. If you want to use the models in standard software, you must convert the .BFRES file to universally supported formats like OBJ, FBX, or DAE. Be aware that proprietary Nintendo shaders and complex skeletal rigs are often lost or broken during conversion. Because this is a closed format, standard online converters universally fail to process it. Only specialized, reverse-engineered software can properly read or export the 3D data.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BFRES file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert BFRES file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use Switch Toolbox or similar software from the "Game 3D Resource Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to BFRES, try Switch Toolbox or another comparable tool in the "Game 3D Resource Archive" category.
The BFRES Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BFRES converter.
