About BDD files

The .bdd file extension is primarily associated with two distinct binary formats that often confuse users due to their lack of cross-compatibility.

first, and most commonly encountered in smart home environments (approx. 19% of files), it represents a Smart Device Firmware Update used by BOND Home (developed by Olibra). These are binary dumps used to update the Bond Bridge firmware, which connects RF remote-controlled fans and shades to Wi-Fi. Users typically encounter these when manually updating device firmware via the Bond Home App. These files are strictly for internal system use; attempting to open them in a text editor will display unreadable binary garbage, and they cannot be converted into human-readable formats like PDF or DOCX.

The second, more "convertible" use case (approx. 11%) is a Genealogy Database file created by Ancestrologie (and related software like Généatique). In this context, the .bdd file is a Paradox or Firebird database container holding family tree records, media links, and historical data. The friction here is proprietary lock-in: older .bdd files may not open in modern genealogy software like Family Tree Maker or Gramps.

For genealogy users, the goal is often archiving or migration. The standard for exchanging this data is GEDCOM (.GED). Since direct conversion from a raw .bdd database file is complex without the original software, the recommended workflow is to open the file within Ancestrologie and use the "Export to GEDCOM" feature. This ensures your data is preserved in a text-based, future-proof format widely supported by sites like Ancestry.com and MyHeritage.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BDD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DSN6, RBI and ORC files.

The BDD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BDD converter.
