About DSN6 files

The .dsn6 file is a binary electron density map used by structural biologists to visualize crystallized protein structures. It stores a three-dimensional grid of numerical values representing the electron density around atoms, which is critical for building accurate molecular models. These files are primarily managed and viewed using specialized crystallography software such as Coot, PyMOL, or the legacy X-PLOR and CNS systems. You can read more about the underlying science on the X-ray crystallography Wikipedia page. Users typically need to convert .dsn6 files because they are highly proprietary, outdated, and practically useless outside of dedicated bioinformatics environments. File sizes can be exceptionally large, and standard 3D viewers cannot interpret the raw mathematical grid data. Furthermore, without the accompanying atomic coordinates (usually found in a PDB file), the map is visually meaningless. If you need to share or analyze this data in modern pipelines, converting to current industry-standard map formats like .CCP4, MTZ, or MAP is highly recommended. Note that converting to a 2D format like JPG requires manually rendering the 3D map first. This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert. Because it relies on complex, legacy binary structures and requires specialized math libraries, standard online converters fail to process it. Emphasize that often only the original scientific software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DSN6 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted COOT, BLB and EXEC files.

The DSN6 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DSN6 converter.
