About BAK1 files

The .BAK1 file is a backup of a player or universe save file used in Starbound. The game automatically creates these files to protect against data corruption. They are managed exclusively by the game engine. Users often want to open or convert these files when their main save file becomes corrupted, or if they wish to extract game stats. The primary disadvantage of the .BAK1 format is that it is proprietary and cannot be read by standard text editors or browsers. You do not typically convert a .BAK1 to standard formats like PDF or JPG. Instead, the best target format is its original state, which requires renaming the file extension back to its original format, such as removing the .BAK1 to leave player. Because it is a closed, proprietary format containing compiled game state data, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original game engine can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your BAK1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DAT and BAK files.
