The .b2 extension represents a classic drawback in file management: the proprietary binary container. It is primarily identified as a game resource or save file for Blitzkrieg 2, the real-time strategy title developed by Nival Interactive. These files pack map geometry, unit stats, and campaign progress into a dense, non-human-readable format designed solely for the game's engine. The major disadvantage here is total opacity; without the specific game executable or community-made extraction tools, the file is a black box. You cannot simply open it in a text editor or image viewer.

However, in enterprise environments, a .b2 file is often a "database extent" - specifically part of a Progress OpenEdge database. In this scenario, the file is merely one segment of a larger volume set (e.g., data.b1, data.b2), meaning it contains only a fragment of the data. Trying to open this standalone is technically impossible; it must be joined with its sibling files.
