About B16 files
The .b16 file extension represents a 16-bit raw image format primarily generated by high-performance scientific cameras manufactured by PCO AG (now part of Excelitas Technologies). These files contain uncompressed, high-dynamic-range grayscale data commonly used in advanced scientific imaging applications such as microscopy, bioluminescence, and particle image velocimetry.
While excellent for data capture, .b16 files present significant hurdles for general use. Because they store raw sensor data with a 16-bit depth (65,536 gray levels) rather than the standard 8-bit (256 levels), standard image viewers like Microsoft Photos or Apple Preview typically fail to open them. Even if they do open, the image often appears completely black because standard monitors cannot display the full dynamic range without histogram adjustment. Furthermore, the format is not supported by web browsers or standard office software.
To make these files usable, you must convert them based on your intent:
For Scientific Analysis: Convert to 16-bit TIFF. This is the industry standard for preserving the full radiometric data integrity while ensuring compatibility with tools like MATLAB or ImageJ.
For Presentations & Web: Convert to PNG or JPG. Note: This process usually involves downsampling to 8-bit color depth, which sacrifices dynamic range for compatibility.
*Note: In rare cases, a .b16 file might be a legacy structural engineering project file from CYPE software or a game asset from older Bullfrog Productions titles.*

The B16 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our B16 converter.
