About AV1 files

The .av1 file extension contains an AOMedia Video 1 video stream. It is an open, royalty-free video coding format designed for high-efficiency video transmission over the Internet. Developed as the successor to VP9 by the Alliance for Open Media, this format was designed to compete with the heavily patented HEVC (H.265) standard. You can natively open .av1 files using modern web browsers, or robust local software like VLC media player and MPC-HC. The primary disadvantage of the .av1 format is its extreme computational complexity. Older hardware lacks dedicated AV1 hardware decoders, forcing the device's CPU to process the dense compression. This often results in stuttering playback, severe battery drain on laptops and smartphones, and outright rejection by older non-linear editing (NLE) software. Because of these severe performance and compatibility limits, users frequently need to convert .av1 files into more widely supported targets. The best target formats are MP4 (using the H.264 codec) for universal playback on smart TVs, mobile devices, and legacy browsers, or MKV if you need to retain multiple audio and subtitle tracks. Note that converting AV1 to older codecs like H.264 will almost certainly result in a larger file size. Because AV1 is a complex, heavily compressed format requiring updated FFmpeg libraries, standard online converters often timeout or fail to process the intense video data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AV1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MP4, MKV, AVIF, WEBM, MOV, H264, H265, JPG, PNG, JPEG and HEVC files.
