About ATO files

An .ATO file primarily functions as a proprietary game save data file for the co-op deckbuilding game, Across the Obelisk. Inside this file, the game stores critical player profiles, unlocked characters, deck configurations, and campaign progression. In a secondary context, .ATO is also utilized as an Autodesk InfraWorks model archive to store complex 3D infrastructure models.

Because the .ATO format is heavily proprietary, users face severe limitations. If an Across the Obelisk save file corrupts due to a cloud sync error, players cannot open the file in a standard text editor to fix it. This risks hundreds of hours of lost progress. Similarly, Autodesk .ATO archives are locked into the Autodesk ecosystem. They often exceed standard file sizes and require expensive CAD subscriptions to open, making them inaccessible to external stakeholders or standard web browsers.

Standard online converters fail to process these closed formats. You cannot directly convert an .ATO game save into a standard document, though advanced users may seek to extract internal data to JSON or TXT. For CAD users, converting an InfraWorks .ATO archive to universal 3D formats like DWG, DXF, or FBX requires using the original Autodesk software to natively export the data.

This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because only the original software possesses the correct logic to parse the encoded data. However, convert.guru provides a practical workaround. Just drag and drop your .ATO file to identify its true format, inspect the internal hex or text structure, and convert it if our system detects a supported embedded format.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ATO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SGS, USA and WHS files.

The ATO Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ATO converter.
