About APW files

The .APW file extension is most frequently associated with the Aspen Plus Workbook, a proprietary format generated by AspenTech Aspen Plus. This software is the industry standard for chemical process optimization and simulation. The file acts as a container (often using the Microsoft Compound OLE2 structure) that holds process flowsheets, chemical property data, and simulation constraints. A common problem for users is the high barrier to entry: Aspen Plus is expensive, enterprise-grade software. Engineers and students often need to view these simulations or extract data without access to a valid license. For documentation, converting the workbook layouts to PDF is the standard approach, while extracting raw simulation data to XLSX or CSV is preferred for further analysis in Microsoft Excel.

Alternatively, an .APW file may be an encrypted password database created by the legacy utility AnyPassword. These files are essentially locked vaults containing sensitive credentials. Users typically encounter these when trying to migrate away from older password managers. The goal here is usually to convert the locked database into a generic CSV format so credentials can be imported into modern solutions like 1Password or Bitwarden. A third, rarer variant involves DeLaval ALPRO herd management systems, where the file is actually a renamed JetDB (Access) database.

Convert.Guru analyzes your APW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted QZTP, PTS and TST files.

The APW Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our APW converter.
