Convert APW to another file type
To convert APW workbooks to another format, you need Aspen Plus or other Database software.
Convert a file to APW
To convert other file formats to the "Simulation Workspace Database" file type, you need software like Aspen Plus or a similar tool.
About APW files
The .APW file extension serves multiple specialized roles across different industries. Most commonly, it functions as an Aspen Plus Workbook file. Engineers use Aspen Plus by AspenTech to store complex chemical process simulation data using a Microsoft Compound file structure. Additionally, .APW is used as an encrypted password database by AnyPassword Pro or 1Password, and as a herd management workspace using a JetDB structure for DeLaval ALPRO milking systems. These formats have significant disadvantages for average users. An Aspen Plus file requires expensive, specialized enterprise software licenses to open. You cannot view the simulation parameters natively in a web browser or standard text editor. Similarly, password managers heavily encrypt the files to prevent data extraction, creating extreme vendor lock-in. Converting .APW files directly is complicated due to encryption or complex internal database structures. If you need the raw data, converting to generic targets like CSV, XML, or TXT is ideal, but you will lose the proprietary UI layout, encryption protections, and relational logic of the original software. Because this file format is highly proprietary and difficult to open or convert, standard online converters often fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, you can just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your APW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert APW file to TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW, PART, DOWNLOAD, CRDOWNLOAD, LOCK or PID, you can use Aspen Plus or similar software from the "Chemical Process Simulation Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to APW, try Aspen Plus or another comparable tool in the "Chemical Process Simulation Storage" category.
The APW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our APW converter.
