The .APW file extension is most frequently associated with the Aspen Plus Workbook, a proprietary format generated by AspenTech Aspen Plus. This software is the industry standard for chemical process optimization and simulation. The file acts as a container (often using the Microsoft Compound OLE2 structure) that holds process flowsheets, chemical property data, and simulation constraints. A common problem for users is the high barrier to entry: Aspen Plus is expensive, enterprise-grade software.
