About APM files
The .APM extension is shared by several distinct file formats, creating significant ambiguity for users. The most common variety (approx. 39%) is an Accellion Attachment metadata file. These are not the actual documents you intend to open (like a PDF or DOCX); rather, they are small pointer files generated by Kiteworks (formerly Accellion) secure file transfer systems. They typically only contain text data describing where the real file is stored on a server, making them useless without the original transfer appliance access. Users often encounter these when a browser download fails to retrieve the full payload, leaving them with a tiny, unopenable file.
The second most common type is an AutoPlay Media Studio project file created by Indigo Rose. These files store the settings, layout, and logic for creating interactive software menus. They are proprietary source files, meaning you cannot simply "play" them like a video; they must be compiled within the software to generate a functional EXE.
A legacy use case involves the Aldus Placeable Metafile, an ancient vector image format similar to WMF. These are vector graphics that modern image viewers like Photoshop may no longer support natively.
Conversion Recommendations:
- For Accellion Files: These cannot be "converted" to the target document. The solution is to re-download the file correctly via the secure link or view the text inside to find the source URL.
- For Aldus Images: Convert these to SVG (for vector editing), PDF (for printing), or PNG (for web use) to ensure compatibility with modern operating systems.
- For GIS Data (Esri ArcPad): These XML-based map documents should be converted to KML or SHP for use in Google Earth or modern GIS tools.
Convert.Guru analyzes your APM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted XCF, SCM and PNM files.
The APM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our APM converter.
