About APM files

The .APM file extension is heavily fragmented and serves multiple unrelated software ecosystems. Most frequently, it acts as an attachment metadata file generated by the Accellion File Transfer Appliance (now known as Kiteworks). In this context, it stores transfer logs, user IDs, and background metadata for secure file sharing. Another major use case is as an interactive autorun menu project created by AutoPlay Media Studio, which compiles multimedia presentations into executable menus for CD/DVDs or USB drives. Secondary uses include XML-based map documents for Esri ArcPad, ZIP-compressed interactive presentations for AuthorGEN, and character animation files for Autodesk 3ds Max.

Working with .APM files is notoriously frustrating because the extension lacks a universal standard. If you receive an .APM file, your operating system will not know which application to open it with. The files are highly proprietary. Accellion metadata files are useless outside their native secure transfer appliance. AutoPlay Media Studio files require a paid license to edit and cannot be viewed on macOS or Linux natively. Furthermore, Esri ArcPad is a discontinued mobile mapping software, making its .APM files difficult to access on modern GIS platforms.

Converting .APM files depends entirely on their origin. For AutoPlay Media projects, extraction is key; you often need to convert or extract the internal assets to standard formats like JPG, MP4, or MP3. For ArcPad map documents and SAP PowerDesigner data models, the underlying structure is XML, meaning you can safely convert them to TXT, CSV, or standard XML for data mining or archiving. If you are dealing with AuthorGEN presentations, you can extract the contents as a ZIP archive. Drop your file here to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser. We will identify the specific .APM variant and help you extract or convert the data to standard, accessible formats.

Convert.Guru analyzes your APM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The APM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our APM converter.
