The .PYX file extension is primarily used for Cython source code. Cython is an optimizing static compiler for both the Python programming language and the extended Cython programming language. These files allow developers to write Python code that calls back and forth from C or C++ natively. They are heavily utilized in software like the Ren'Py Visual Novel Engine to optimize performance-critical logic. Alternatively, a .PYX file can be a tax return data archive created by CCH ProSystem fx Tax. These tax files are actually ZIP archives containing encrypted PDF documents.
The main disadvantage of .PYX files is high context dependency. Cython source files require the Cython compiler and a C compiler to be transformed into machine-readable C or CPP files, and then into compiled binary modules (PYD or SO). Without the correct development environment, they are plain text files useless to standard users. CCH tax files are proprietary and encrypted; you cannot open them natively without a commercial subscription.
For Cython files, the best conversion target is C or CPP for compilation, or HTML for code annotation viewing. For CCH files, the target is PDF, but decryption requires the original software.
Because these formats are either raw source code needing compilation or encrypted proprietary archives, standard online converters fail to process them.
