About PYX files
The .PYX extension primarily designates source code written in Cython, a programming language that acts as a static compiler for Python. By adding static type declarations to Python code, developers use .PYX files to generate C extensions that yield significant performance boosts - often running 100x faster than standard Python. This format is the backbone of major scientific libraries like NumPy and Pandas, as well as the Ren'Py visual novel engine.
However, .PYX files introduce significant friction for standard workflows. Unlike a regular PY script, you cannot simply execute a .PYX file with the python interpreter. It requires a complex build chain involving a C compiler (like GCC or MSVC) and a setup.py configuration or pyximport hooks. This makes sharing scripts difficult, as the recipient must have a compatible build environment installed. Additionally, a completely different usage of the .PYX extension exists within the accounting sector: Wolters Kluwer CCH ProSystem fx Tax software uses it for proprietary, often encrypted, tax return data which is completely unreadable outside their paid ecosystem.
For developers, the best conversion strategy depends on the goal. To make the code universally runnable (at the cost of speed), convert the logic back to standard PY. For build integration, transpile the .PYX to C or CPP source files. For optimization analysis, converting to an annotated HTML file is essential to visualize where the code interacts with the Python C-API.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PYX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted PYO, PY, PXI, MDE and MJS files.
The PYX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PYX converter.
