About AMV files
A .AMV file is a proprietary video format developed by Actions Semiconductor specifically for low-cost Chinese portable media players (often misleadingly marketed as "MP4 players" or "S1 MP3 players").
While the device marketing suggests support for standard formats, these players often possess weak processors that cannot decode real MP4 or AVI files. Instead, they require videos to be converted into this raw, uncompressed .AMV format, which trades huge file sizes for minimal playback CPU usage. Practical constraints include extremely low resolutions (commonly 128x128, 160x120, or 320x240), low frame rates (10-16 fps), and poor audio quality (ADPCM).
Users typically encounter two limitations:
1. Archiving: Recovering old videos from a dusty player that won't play on modern software like QuickTime.
2. Loading Devices: Trying to put modern videos onto these retro devices, which requires a specialized (and often lost) conversion tool to downscale the footage.
For archiving and sharing, the best target is MP4 (H.264) for universal compatibility. For editing, convert to MOV or high-bitrate AVI.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your AMV file.
Users also converted MP4, AVI, AVM, MP3, MOV, WMV, MKV, WAV, AVIF, JPG, ZIP, M2TS and REC files.
The AMV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AMV converter.
