The .AEC file extension primarily represents two entirely distinct formats: a compressed architectural drawing used by DataCAD and an After Effects Composition file generated by Maxon Cinema 4D for use in Adobe After Effects.
DataCAD .AEC files store detailed 2D and 3D architectural models. They are highly proprietary, closed formats. You cannot open them directly in standard CAD software like AutoCAD. Because these files are restricted to a single expensive niche software, sharing them is a major problem. Collaborators or clients will see an unsupported file error. DataCAD users must manually export their work to universal formats like DXF, DWG, or PDF so others can read the plans.
Cinema 4D .AEC files contain camera data, lighting parameters, and 3D nulls. They serve as a bridge to align 3D animations with 2D video composites. However, this bridging file requires a specific importer plugin installed in After Effects. Without that plugin, the file is useless. Creators should render their final visual output to MP4 or MOV to share with clients.
