About ACG files
The .ACG file extension is highly fragmented and used for several distinct purposes. Primarily, it functions as a Broadcast Graphics Asset Package for systems like Chyron AXIS or Avid Content Group, as an ACG Player resource package, or as a legacy Microsoft Agent Character File. In many cases, these files are simply disguised archive containers holding scripts, audio files, and images.
Depending on the specific variant, these files are natively managed by broadcast production software, legacy Windows utilities, or universal archivers like 7-Zip and WinRAR. The biggest disadvantage of the .ACG format is its ambiguity. Because unrelated companies - from Avid to Microsoft to GoldWave - chose the same three-letter extension, operating systems frequently fail to assign the correct default program. Standard web browsers cannot open them natively, and the broadcast variants often require expensive, specialized software to interpret the layout data.
Instead of attempting a direct format conversion, the best solution is to treat the .ACG file as a compressed container. The most practical target formats are standard archives like ZIP, RAR, or 7Z. Extracting the file allows you to salvage the internal media assets (such as JPG or WAV files) without relying on proprietary software.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert directly because it serves as a closed, proprietary wrapper. Standard online converters fail to process it because they cannot guess the underlying data structure, and often only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru offers a pragmatic workaround. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Our system can inspect the binary signature of the file to show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded archive format (like ZIP or RAR), viewing or extraction may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ACG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ACG file to MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, WEBM, MKV, M4V, 3GP, OGV, ASF or RM, you can use WinRAR or similar software from the "Asset Packaging & Character Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MTS, MOV, RMVB, DIVX, RM, H264, TS, WMV, VOB, MP4, XVID or AVI files to ACG, try WinRAR or another comparable tool in the "Asset Packaging & Character Data" category.
The ACG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ACG converter.
