Convert a file to ACG
To convert other file formats to the "Character Sprite Preview" file type, you need software like Microsoft Agent or a similar tool.
About ACG files
The .acg extension is a "chameleon" format used in three distinct, unconnected environments, causing significant confusion for users.
1. Microsoft Agent Preview File (Legacy): Historically, this is the most common definition. It is a preview file for Microsoft Agent, the technology behind the animated assistants (like Clippy) in Windows 98/XP. Unlike the main character file (ACS), the .acg file only contains a cached graphical preview (Head/Icon) used by the Microsoft Agent Character Editor to display the character without loading the full animation set.
Friction: This format is obsolete. Modern Windows (10/11) does not support Microsoft Agent natively, meaning you cannot "open" these files to see the animation without third-party patches like Double Agent or MASH.
Conversion: Users typically want to convert these sprites to standard images. You can sometimes rename them to raw bitmap formats or use legacy extraction tools to save the frames as BMP or GIF.
2. Broadcast Graphics Package (Professional): In professional broadcast workflows (approx. 23% of files), an .acg file is a proprietary asset package used by Chyron (specifically AXIS/PRIME systems) or Avid workflows.
The Secret: These are often just renamed ZIP or RAR archives containing standard media assets (PNGs, XMLs).
Solution: If you are a video editor, try renaming the extension from .acg to zip and opening it with 7-Zip to access the internal source files.
3. Audio Comparer Group: A data file used by Audio Comparer by Bolide Software. It stores the results of an audio scan (fingerprints of music files) to identify duplicates. These cannot be converted to audio; they are purely database records.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ACG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ACG file to MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, WEBM, MKV, M4V, 3GP, OGV, ASF or RM, you can use Microsoft Agent or similar software from the "Agent Character Preview" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MTS, MOV, RMVB, DIVX, RM, H264, TS, WMV, VOB, MP4, XVID or AVI files to ACG, try Microsoft Agent or another comparable tool in the "Agent Character Preview" category.
The ACG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ACG converter.
