About ABS files

The .abs extension is a multi-purpose container that often frustrates users because it refers to three completely different, incompatible formats depending on its origin.

  1. Absolute Database File (Legacy Data): Frequently, this is a distinct, high-speed database file created by ComponentAce for Delphi applications. It compacts an entire relational database into a single file. The problem is that it is a proprietary format; standard viewers like Microsoft Access or Excel cannot open it. Without the original custom software, your data is locked inside.
  2. ALI Firmware Image: It may also be a binary firmware update for satellite receivers (STB) using ALI Corporation chipsets. These are binary blobs meant for hardware flashing, not human reading.
  3. Allplan CAD Data: In architectural workflows, it stores reinforcement steel schedules for Nemetschek Allplan. Sharing these requires the recipient to own expensive CAD software.
  4. Avant Browser Skin: An older format for customizing browser interfaces.

The ABS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ABS converter.
