About ABS files

An .ABS file is heavily fragmented and typically functions as one of three things: a proprietary Absolute Database file, a firmware update for ALI Corporation set-top boxes, or a CAD reinforcement steel schedule. In rarer cases, it functions as an interactive project for Anybook Reader or an embedded executable for Renesas hardware.

Because the extension is shared across completely different industries, you need specific software to open it. Database variants require ComponentAce Absolute Database tools. CAD variants require Nemetschek Allplan. Firmware files rely on AliEditor or direct hardware flashing.

The massive disadvantage of the .ABS format is this exact fragmentation combined with its proprietary nature. You cannot determine the contents of an .ABS file just by looking at the extension. Furthermore, if it is a database, it locks your data into a closed ecosystem that standard SQL clients cannot read. If it is an Allplan file, it requires a very expensive software license to view.
