About AB files
The .AB file extension primarily represents either an Android Debug Bridge (ADB) Backup file or a Unity Game Asset Bundle. Android backups are generated via the ADB command-line tool to preserve app data and device settings without requiring root access. Unity Asset Bundles, managed by the Unity Game Engine, contain compiled 3D models, textures, and audio designed to load dynamically during gameplay. Less commonly, .AB denotes a vehicle As-Built configuration file used by the Ford Motor Company. Both dominant formats are highly restrictive. Android backups use the Java Deflate algorithm and prepend a custom 24-byte header, rendering them unreadable to standard archive tools like 7-Zip. They may also utilize AES encryption. Unity Asset Bundles are proprietary, compiled binary archives strictly engineered for the game engine to read, entirely preventing direct user editing. This makes the format frustrating; users cannot simply double-click the file to access the contents. Consequently, standard online converters routinely fail because they cannot parse the custom headers or proprietary binary structures. Users typically need to convert Android .AB files to standard TAR archives to extract SMS histories, app databases, and local saves. Unity .AB files are often extracted into accessible multimedia formats like PNG for textures, OBJ for models, or MP3 for audio modding. Because these are closed formats, just drag and drop your file onto convert.guru to identify the format, view its underlying structure, and convert it when possible. Even if standard conversion fails, our analyzer detects the specific file header and allows you to inspect the raw internal content, increasing your chances of successfully extracting the embedded data.
Convert.Guru analyzes your AB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert AB file to TAR, MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC or APE, you can use Android SDK or similar software from the "Game Asset & System Backup" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to AB, try Android SDK or another comparable tool in the "Game Asset & System Backup" category.
The AB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AB converter.
