About ABCDDB files

An .ABCDDB file is the primary SQLite storage database for the Apple Contacts application (formerly Address Book) on macOS. It acts as the backend repository for all your contact cards, groups, and metadata.

While effective for the operating system, this format is a nightmare for direct user access. It is a hidden system file (typically found in ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook) locked behind Core Data schemas. Because it is a relational database rather than a flat file, contact details are scattered across dozens of linked tables (like ZABCDRECORD and ZABCDEMAILADDRESS). You cannot simply double-click it to read a phone number, and it is useless to software like Microsoft Outlook or Google Contacts in its raw state. Users often encounter these files when attempting manual data recovery or migration and find themselves stuck with a binary blob that text editors can't read.
