A .aba file is primarily an Australian Bankers' Association (ABA) Direct Entry file. It contains bulk transaction data used by Australian businesses to pay employees or suppliers simultaneously. These files are typically generated by accounting software like MYOB AccountRight or Xero, and then uploaded to Australian internet banking portals for processing. A much smaller percentage of .aba files belong to legacy Palm Desktop software, where they function as address book archives, or are Avant Browser add-on files.
The .aba format presents significant challenges. It relies on a rigid, decades-old 120-character fixed-width text structure without standard delimiters. It is notoriously difficult for humans to read, making manual verification of large payroll runs prone to error. Furthermore, manually opening and saving a .aba file in a standard text editor almost always corrupts the precise character spacing, causing banks to instantly reject the entire payment batch. It also stores sensitive unencrypted financial data.
To safely verify transactions before processing, convert .aba to CSV or XLSX. This maps the fixed-width text into readable spreadsheet columns. For compliance and secure archiving, convert it to PDF. For legacy Palm OS contact archives, convert the file to VCF (vCard) to import your old contacts into modern systems like Google Contacts.
