About A26 files

A .a26 file is a raw binary dump of an original Atari 2600 video game cartridge. It contains the exact machine code and game assets required to run the game. Gamers and archivists use these ROM images to play classic 1970s and 1980s console games on modern hardware using specialized emulation software like Stella or RetroArch.

The primary disadvantage of the .a26 format is that it is strictly compiled binary code meant for a highly specific, obsolete microprocessor (the MOS Technology 6507). Your standard operating system cannot natively understand or execute it. Furthermore, a common misconception is that a game ROM can be converted into a playable video file like an MP4 or an audio track. This is impossible, as the file contains executable instructions, not media streams.

Converting a .a26 file usually involves simply renaming the extension to a raw BIN file, or compressing it into a ZIP or 7Z archive to manage large ROM collections. Because this is a machine-specific binary format, it is difficult to open or convert with standard document tools. Emulators are the only software that can properly interpret the data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your A26 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
