About 3D2 files
The .3D2 file extension represents a Stereo CAD-3D 2.0 Image File, a legacy 3D graphics format created for the Atari ST computer system in the late 1980s. These files store early 3D wireframe and solid polygon models generated by the CAD-3D 2.0 software, which was published by Antic Software. They were primarily used by digital artists and developers experimenting with early 3D modeling and animation.
Modern users face massive disadvantages when encountering .3D2 files. It is an extremely obsolete, proprietary binary format. It is completely unsupported by modern 3D modeling suites like Blender or Autodesk Maya. The format limits are severe by today's standards: it lacks support for modern material properties, high-polygon counts, UV mapping, or complex rigging. You cannot open these files natively on Windows, macOS, or standard web browsers.
To make the geometry usable in a modern workflow, you must convert the file to standard targets like OBJ, STL, or GLTF. Converting these models usually extracts only the base polygon mesh. Original lighting setups, specific CAD-3D rendering parameters, and camera data are almost always lost in the translation process.
Because this file format is closed, severely outdated, and undocumented in modern libraries, standard online converters fail to read the binary geometry. Often, only the original Atari ST software or highly specialized retro extraction tools can parse the 3D data correctly.
Convert.Guru analyzes your 3D2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert 3D2 file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use CAD-3D 2.0 or similar software from the "Legacy 3D Model Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to 3D2, try CAD-3D 2.0 or another comparable tool in the "Legacy 3D Model Storage" category.
The 3D2 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our 3D2 converter.
