About ZVI files

.ZVI (Zeiss Vision Image) is a proprietary microscopy image format developed by Carl Zeiss. These files store complex multidimensional scientific data, such as Z-stacks, time-lapse sequences, and multi-channel fluorescence, alongside extensive hardware metadata from the microscope.

They are primarily generated, viewed, and managed using Carl Zeiss AxioVision or modern Zeiss ZEN Blue software.

Users frequently need to convert .ZVI files because the format is highly restrictive and closed. You cannot open these files in standard image viewers or web browsers. Relying on the .ZVI format locks you into the Zeiss software ecosystem, which can be expensive or unavailable on typical workstations. Additionally, these files can exceed several gigabytes for complex scans, making them difficult to share. Standard online image converters fail to process them because they cannot parse the internal Microsoft Compound structure and the proprietary microscopy metadata.

The best conversion targets for long-term scientific preservation are TIFF or .OME-TIFF, which retain high bit-depth data and metadata. For presentations or basic sharing, JPG or PNG are practical, though you will lose multidimensional layers, spatial calibration, and channel separation.

Because .ZVI is a closed format, often only the original Zeiss software or specialized bio-imaging tools like ImageJ can properly read or export the full dataset. Even if the proprietary layers are complex, our analysis can inspect the file, reveal text metadata, and if we detect a supported embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ZVI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZIP, SAV, LSM, JPG and HEIC files.

FAQ

If you want to convert ZVI file to JPG, PDF, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, TIF, WEBP, ICO, CUR, PSD or PSB, you can use Zeiss ZEN Blue or similar software from the "Microscopy Image Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to ZVI, try Zeiss ZEN Blue or another comparable tool in the "Microscopy Image Data Storage" category.

The ZVI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ZVI converter.
