A .zuml file is the native project archive for ArgoUML, a legacy open-source tool used for creating Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams. Internally, this file is actually a standard ZIP archive that contains the model data in XMI (XML Metadata Interchange) format and the visual diagram layouts in .PGML (Precision Graphics Markup Language).
The main drawback with .zuml files is the obsolescence of the software that created them. ArgoUML has not been actively maintained for many years and relies on older versions of the Java Runtime Environment, making it difficult or insecure to run on modern operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS Sonoma. Additionally, while the internal XMI data is theoretically portable, most modern modeling tools (like StarUML or Enterprise Architect) cannot natively read the .zuml container or its proprietary visual layout data. This effectively locks your software architecture diagrams inside an inaccessible format.
To recover your work, conversion is usually necessary. For editing purposes, the best path is extracting the internal XMI content to import the logic into a modern UML tool, though you will likely lose the visual positioning of boxes and lines. For archiving, documentation, or sharing with stakeholders who cannot install legacy Java apps, converting the diagrams to static formats like PDF, SVG, or PNG is the most reliable workflow.
