About ZS2 files

The .ZS2 file extension represents two distinct, proprietary data environments that often trap users in software lock-in.

First and most critically, it is a Materials Testing Data file generated by ZwickRoell testXpert II and testXpert III software. These files contain vital engineering measurements - tensile strength, compression data, and material properties - stored in a GZIP-compressed, binary-encoded XML structure. The core problem is that .ZS2 files are designed for the testXpert ecosystem; they are not natively readable by standard analysis tools like Microsoft Excel, MATLAB, or Python pandas. Engineers and lab technicians often face friction when attempting to archive legacy test results or migrate data to a neutral format like XML or CSV without maintaining expensive software licenses.

Second, in the emulation community, a .ZS2 file is a Slot 2 Saved State created by ZSNES, a classic Super Nintendo emulator. Unlike in-game battery saves (SRM), this file captures the exact millisecond state of the CPU and RAM, allowing players to resume instantly. These are version-specific and notoriously difficult to transfer to modern emulators like RetroArch or SNES9x without compatibility issues.

For the ZwickRoell format, the best conversion target is XML (for structural integrity) or CSV (for immediate data plotting). For ZSNES files, they are generally strictly for use within the original emulator, though some hex-editing tools exist.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ZS2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted TRA, XTAK, BAI and DAT files.

The ZS2 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ZS2 converter.
