About YLD files
The .yld extension primarily identifies a Game Character Model Layout file used by the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE), specifically within titles like Red Dead Redemption 2. These binary files define the skeletal layout, cloth physics, and prop positioning for character models. Because they are proprietary and often compressed/encrypted, users cannot open them with standard image viewers or text editors. To edit or view these assets, modders must use specialized tools like OpenIV or CodeWalker to export the data into common 3D formats like OBJ or FBX for use in Blender.
In the agricultural sector, .yld refers to a Yield Monitor Data File generated by Ag Leader Technology hardware. These files store crucial precision farming data, including GPS coordinates, grain moisture levels, and harvest mass. Farmers and agronomists often struggle with this format because it is locked to the SMS Software ecosystem. To analyze this data in Microsoft Excel or generic GIS tools like QGIS, the files must be converted to CSV or SHP (Shapefile). Less frequently, the extension is used by ZWCAD for plotter data or within semiconductor manufacturing for automated test equipment (ATE) yield curves.

The YLD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our YLD converter.
