About XVD files
The .xvd extension primarily identifies an Xbox Virtual Disk, a secure container format developed by Microsoft for the Xbox ecosystem. These files serve as virtualized storage drives, often containing game data, system updates, or development builds used within the Xbox Development Kit (XDK). The main drawback for users is the heavy encryption and proprietary structure; unlike standard ISO or VHD files, an .xvd cannot be simply mounted in Windows or opened with 7-Zip without specific decryption keys or the xvdi.exe tool found in the official SDK. Users typically encounter these files when dealing with preserved development builds or attempting to emulate Xbox software, necessitating conversion to a standard ISO (XISO) for compatibility with emulators like Xemu or to a standard VHD for file browsing.
A secondary, less common use case is a firmware update file for ALI Corp set-top box chipsets. In this context, the file is a binary blob used strictly for flashing hardware and is not intended for editing or conversion. Attempting to convert this variant is generally useless as it contains raw machine code specific to the chipset logic.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XVD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XVD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XVD converter.
