About XTI files
The .XTI file format primarily functions as an XML-based configuration document. Its most prominent use is within TwinCAT 3 (developed by Beckhoff Automation), where it acts as an XML trace item representing EtherCAT hardware networks and device lists. It is also utilized by the open-source XTrackCAD software to store exported model railway track components.
Opening these files outside of their dedicated ecosystems is a frustrating experience. Because they are highly specialized configuration files, you cannot simply double-click an .XTI file to view an industrial network layout or a railway design. Viewing the intended graphics requires installing heavy industrial engineering environments or specific CAD software, which is entirely impractical for quick inspection or sharing.
If you simply need to read the underlying data, your best conversion targets are XML or TXT. Because the file structure is heavily text-based, converting it to standard text formats allows you to safely inspect the raw configuration logic, addresses, and track coordinates. If you need a visual representation of the layout, converting to PDF or JPG is ideal, though this generally requires printing from the original software.
Standard online converters inevitably fail to process .XTI files because they lack the specific industrial or CAD rendering engines required to interpret these proprietary XML schemas. Because this file format is difficult to open or convert, often only the original software can properly read or export the visual data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XTI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XTI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XTI converter.
