About XTC files
The .xtc file extension primarily represents a compressed molecular dynamics trajectory file generated by GROMACS, a widely used open-source package for biochemical simulations. These files store atomic coordinates at various time steps during a simulation in a highly compressed binary format using the XDR standard. Scientists use specialized software like VMD or the GROMACS suite itself to visualize or analyze these trajectories. The primary disadvantage of the .xtc format is that it is a highly specialized, binary file that often exceeds gigabytes in size and is completely opaque to standard web browsers or generic applications. Users often need to convert these files into standard structural formats like pdb or gro to share specific static frames with collaborators or import them into standard 3D modeling tools. However, converting to pdb loses the continuous timeline data, extracting only static snapshots. Additionally, the .xtc extension is sometimes used as a game texture data archive extracted via tools like the XTX Extractor, or as a model railroad track layout created in XTrackCAD. These are closed, proprietary formats. Standard online converters often fail to process them because they lack the specific decryption keys, molecular parsers, or library dependencies required. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. We can identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XTC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XTC file to DCD, PDB or GRO, you can use GROMACS or similar software from the "Molecular Dynamics Trajectory Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert files to XTC, try GROMACS or another comparable tool in the "Molecular Dynamics Trajectory Storage" category.
The XTC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XTC converter.
