About XRL files
The .XRL file extension is primarily associated with Geomagic Design X (formerly INUS Technology), an industry-leading 3D reverse engineering software. These files store highly complex 3D scan data, feature trees, and parametric models used to convert physical parts into digital CAD models. Alternatively, .XRL files function as XML-based document markup and redline files in OpenText Brava! and Xerox DocuShare, or as encrypted log files for ComponentAce Absolute Database.
Users often need to convert .XRL files because the primary 3D format is heavily proprietary. Viewing these files requires access to an expensive, specialized enterprise software license. Sending an .XRL file to a client or manufacturer who lacks the native software usually results in a complete workflow block. Furthermore, the files are typically too large for standard email attachments and cannot be natively rendered by web browsers.
For 3D workflows, the best practice is to export the .XRL data to universal CAD formats like STEP, IGES, or STL. This ensures broad compatibility with standard CAD packages like SolidWorks or AutoCAD, though some of the native parametric history might be baked into static geometry or lost. For the XML markup variants, converting to PDF or standard XML is recommended to permanently preserve the annotations.
Because the Geomagic .XRL format is closed and proprietary, standard online converters consistently fail to process it. Often only the original software can properly read or export the geometric data. We can inspect the file, reveal its internal structure, and if our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format (such as plain text in the markup variants), viewing or partial conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XRL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XRL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XRL converter.
