About XQUERY files

The .xquery file contains source code written in XQuery, a functional programming language designed to extract and manipulate data from XML formats. Developers use it to query large XML databases and transform complex data structures.

You can open and edit these files using specialized development environments like Oxygen XML Editor, Eclipse, or standard text editors like Visual Studio Code. You can read more about the language specifications on Wikipedia.

The main disadvantage of an .xquery file is that it requires an execution engine (like Saxon or BaseX) and an accompanying XML data source to produce actual output. Without the target data, the file is just raw, unexecutable code. Non-technical users often struggle to read the complex syntax and cannot execute the file natively in a web browser or standard office software.

If you need to share the code with non-developers, converting it to TXT or MD is the best option. If you actually need the output data, you must run the script against an XML database to generate an XML or HTML file.

Online converters fail to "convert" .xquery into its final data output because they lack the necessary local XML datasets and database connections.

Convert.Guru analyzes your XQUERY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XQUERY Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XQUERY converter.
