About XOJ files
A .XOJ file is a compressed journal document created by Xournal or its modern successor, Xournal++. These files are widely used in academic and professional settings for taking handwritten digital notes, sketching, and annotating PDF documents. Technically, a .XOJ file is a GZIP-compressed XML file that stores vector stroke data, highlighter marks, and text overlays.
Users often deal with issues when sharing .XOJ files because they are proprietary and require specific open-source software to view. A critical limitation is that .XOJ files often do not contain the background PDF; they simply store a file path pointing to it. If you email a .XOJ file to a colleague or move it to a different folder without the original PDF, the background will disappear, leaving only floating annotations. To fix this compatibility issue and ensure the document looks correct on any device, users typically convert .XOJ to PDF (which "bakes" the strokes and background together) or PNG for quick image sharing.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XOJ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XOJ file to PDF, ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE or ARJ, you can use Xournal++ or similar software from the "Digital Note Taking" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to XOJ, try Xournal++ or another comparable tool in the "Digital Note Taking" category.
The XOJ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XOJ converter.
