About XMPSES files
The .xmpses file is a session marker generated by Adobe Media Encoder, typically created when a sequence is queued for export from Adobe Premiere Pro. These files serve as temporary sidecar data, tracking the status of a batch encoding job or storing XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) markers for the associated media.
A common source of frustration is that users mistake the .xmpses file for the actual video output because it often shares the same filename as the target media (e.g., MyVideo.mp4 and MyVideo.xmpses). However, the .xmpses file contains no audio or video data; it is merely a lightweight text-based definition file encoded in UTF-16. Consequently, it fails to open in media players like VLC or Windows Media Player.
If you need to verify the encoding settings or view the log data contained within, you cannot simply "play" the file. Instead, the most practical workflow is to convert the .xmpses file to TXT or XML to read its contents in a standard editor, or to PDF for archiving the session details. If your intent is to get a video file, you likely need to locate the accompanying MP4 or MOV file in the same directory, or re-run the export if the actual media is missing.

The XMPSES Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XMPSES converter.
