The .PEK file format is primarily an Adobe Peak Waveform cache file generated by Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, and Adobe Audition. These files act as a temporary cache to store the visual representation of audio waveforms. This allows the editing software to draw the audio tracks instantly on the timeline without re-processing the heavy original audio data. A secondary, less common use is as a Game Asset Archive package for gaming titles developed by Perfect World Entertainment.
The main disadvantage of the .PEK format is the severe confusion it causes. Users frequently mistake it for an actual playable audio file and attempt to convert it to MP3 or WAV. However, Adobe .PEK files contain absolutely no audio data; they only hold proprietary visual rendering instructions. Additionally, these cache files accumulate aggressively over time in a hidden media cache folder, consuming massive amounts of disk space if not managed.
Because an Adobe .PEK file does not contain actual media, converting it to a standard audio target is impossible. The most pragmatic solution is simply to delete the file to free up hard drive space. Adobe software will regenerate the cache automatically if the original project is opened again. For the game archive variant, specialized modding tools like PekEdit are required to extract the internal textures or 3D models into usable formats.
Because this is a closed, proprietary format, it is extremely difficult to open or convert with standard utilities. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
