Extract text from XLO files

To convert other file formats to the "Translation Log File" file type, you need software like Autodesk 3ds Max or a similar tool.
The .xlo file extension primarily represents a translation log generated during the export of 3D models, most notably by Autodesk 3ds Max and CATIA when converting designs to the STEP format. These files are essentially plain text reports that detail the success, warnings, or errors encountered during the geometry translation process. Users typically encounter these files alongside their 3D exports and are often confused when their operating system fails to recognize them. Because they lack a default association with text editors, opening them requires manually selecting software like Notepad, which is a needless friction point.
A secondary but significant use of the format is within the InsERT software ecosystem (specifically the GT line), where .xlo files store EDI++ (Electronic Data Interchange) information. Unlike the CAD logs, these data exchange files may be GZIP compressed, meaning attempting to open them in a standard text editor will result in unreadable binary gibberish.
For CAD logs, the best conversion path is to TXT for immediate viewing or PDF for archiving the export history. For InsERT data files, conversion to XML or CSV is often necessary to make the structured data usable in other applications.
