About OBV files

A .obv file is primarily a thumbnail preview cache generated by Adobe Bridge (or historically associated with 3D asset managers like Mootools). These files are automatically created to speed up the browsing of large media libraries by storing miniature versions of images, 3D models, and videos. Internally, they often use UTF-16 (LE) encoding to index file locations and metadata.

Users typically encounter these files when cleaning up disk space or troubleshooting hidden folders. A common problem is that you cannot simply double-click a .obv file to view the images inside; it is a system-generated database artifact, not a standard image format like JPG or PNG. Deleting them is generally safe, as the software will regenerate them, but it will slow down browsing until the cache rebuilds. In rarer cases, .obv files are associated with Autodesk 3ds Max as auxiliary data or observation files. For 3D workflows, these should be converted or exported to FBX or OBJ using the native software to ensure compatibility with other tools like Blender or Unity.

Convert.Guru analyzes your OBV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MP4, DLE, GMAX and GUP files.

The OBV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OBV converter.
