About XLC files

The .XLC file format is primarily associated with legacy Microsoft Excel Chart files, heavily used in older versions of the software like Excel 4.0 and Lotus 1-2-3. Instead of embedding charts directly into spreadsheets like modern versions do, older spreadsheet software saved charts as separate .XLC files. Beyond office use, the .XLC extension is notoriously fragmented. It is heavily utilized as a localization string database for video games by developers like Electronic Arts (EA) and Konami, as radio programming channel lists for Baofeng handheld radios, and even as an SQLite media cache database for Skype.

Opening these files locally is a major headache. Legacy Microsoft Excel charts are often blocked by modern Office Trust Center settings due to known security vulnerabilities in old binary formats. The game data files are proprietary, meaning you cannot read them without highly specific, often unsupported modding tools. The Skype cache files require dedicated SQL database viewers like DB Browser for SQLite. Sending an .XLC file to a client or colleague guarantees they will not be able to open it on a mobile device or a standard web browser.
