About XI1 files
A .xi1 file is a proprietary data index generated by surveillance systems, primarily those manufactured by Xiongmai Technology and Hikvision.
Users typically encounter this file when backing up footage from a DVR/NVR to a USB drive. The critical "problem" users face is that .xi1 files are not video files; they are small metadata sidecar files that contain timecodes, seek points, and structural information for the actual video stream (which is usually stored alongside it as a dat, h264, or dav file). Because the .xi1 contains no pixel data, it cannot be "converted" to MP4 or AVI in the traditional sense, nor can it be opened by VLC Media Player.
To view the footage, you must locate the larger companion video file in the same directory. If you have the complete set of files, the best "conversion" method is to use the manufacturer's CMS software (like HikCentral or General_CMS) to export the timeline to a standard format like MP4.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XI1 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XI1 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XI1 converter.
