To convert other file formats to the "Automation Network Binary" file type, you need software like LonMaker or a similar tool.
About XFB files
The .XFB file extension primarily denotes a LonWorks Binary Interface file (also referred to as XIFBIN). This format is utilized extensively in industrial control and building automation networks running the LonWorks protocol, originally developed by Echelon and heavily implemented by HVAC manufacturers like Trane. A secondary, extremely rare use case is the Apple Xserve RAID Firmware Binary file, utilized for updating legacy Apple enterprise storage hardware.
The .XFB format is highly problematic for end-users because it is a strictly proprietary, compiled binary blob. You cannot open it with standard text editors or web browsers. Interacting with it usually requires specialized, expensive engineering software, such as LonMaker or specific device node utilities. This creates severe vendor lock-in, where users are blocked from reading their own network device configurations without paying for premium integration tools.
Users typically attempt to convert .XFB files back into human-readable XIF (External Interface File) formats, TXT, or XML to read device network variables, manufacturer IDs, and configuration parameters.
Because .XFB is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. Converting binary back to human-readable text requires reverse engineering the specific LonTalk manufacturer schema. Our advanced analyzer inspects the binary black box to detect signatures and extract embedded ASCII strings, allowing you to salvage readable data even when full decompilation isn't supported.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XFB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XFB file to SYS, DLL, EXE, DRV, VXD, 386, COM, BAT, CMD, SCR, PIF or LNK, you can use LonMaker or similar software from the "Binary Interface Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MSI, EXE, REG, MST, LNK, CAB, CAT, DRV, INF, SYS, MSU or DLL files to XFB, try LonMaker or another comparable tool in the "Binary Interface Storage" category.
The XFB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XFB converter.
