The .xfo file is an XML Forms Architecture (XFA) template or an XSL-FO Formatted Form. Enterprises use these files to design dynamic, data-driven forms that adjust their layout based on user input or connected database records. They define both the visual presentation and the data capture rules for complex business documents.

The main disadvantage of the .XFO format is its severe vendor lock-in and obsolescence. It requires expensive enterprise software to open natively. Modern web browsers and standard PDF viewers cannot render XFA or XFO forms properly, often displaying an error message instead of the document. Mobile support is practically non-existent. Furthermore, the XFA standard was officially deprecated in the PDF 2.0 specification.
To share these forms with standard users, you must convert the .XFO file to PDF or HTML. Converting to PDF ensures the document looks correct, but it usually flattens the file, meaning dynamic scripts, database bindings, and interactive form fields are lost. Converting to XML allows developers to salvage the raw data structure.
