About XEN files
A .XEN file is primarily a proprietary game archive or compiled script container used by the Neversoft engine, most famously in the Guitar Hero series (e.g., Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock) published by Activision. These files act as digital suitcases, packing thousands of game assets - including audio stems, 3D meshes, textures, and "Queen Bee" compiled scripts - into a single, optimized file for console loading.
A common issue for users is that .XEN files are "black boxes" intended solely for the game engine. You cannot open them with standard media players like VLC or image viewers like Adobe Photoshop, even if they contain music or pictures. They often utilize custom compression (Zlib-based) or encryption that requires specific offset knowledge to parse. Attempting to edit them directly usually corrupts the game. To use the content, you must first extract the internal streams using specialized tools like QuickBMS or Noesis. Once extracted, the raw audio (often .FSB or headerless PCM) can be converted to MP3 or WAV for listening, and textures (often .DDS) can be converted to PNG or JPG for web use or editing.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XEN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert XEN file to EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP, MAP, SAV or DAT, you can use Guitar Hero or similar software from the "Game Asset Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to XEN, try Guitar Hero or another comparable tool in the "Game Asset Archive" category.
The XEN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XEN converter.
