About XCD files
The .xcd extension typically refers to a Materials Studio Chart Document, an XML-based format created by BIOVIA Materials Studio (now part of Dassault Systèmes) to store scientific simulation data. These files contain plotted graphs (such as energy vs. time or convergence trajectories) generated during molecular modeling sessions. Because they are XML-text based, they can technically be opened in text editors, but the raw tags are unreadable for analysis. Users usually need to convert these to Excel (.XLSX) or CSV to extract the raw numerical data, or to PDF to preserve the chart visual.
Less commonly, an .xcd file may be a compressed HMI screen data file used by Omron CX-One automation software, or a legacy CAD exchange file from Nemetschek Allplan. If you cannot open your file in Materials Studio, it is likely one of these industrial formats. The Omron variant is often a ZIP container in disguise; changing the extension to zip may allow you to inspect its internal assets. For Allplan files, you must use the native software to export to standard CAD formats like DWG or DXF.
Convert.Guru analyzes your XCD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The XCD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our XCD converter.
